BENEVOLENCE FADES

We’re given birth by Mother Earth
A life to feed Father Time
Every day just a frantic race
Between the absurd and sublime

Watch me change like seasons do
Playful as spring, crisp like fall
Cold as coldest winter’s bone
Years beneath a black velvet pall

Once beauty and light were my gifts to the world
But benevolence fades to inconsequence
Once a bounding walk and a laughing voice
Lately overshadowed by indifference

Pieces of me break away and float off into the night
Won’t you help me capture them like fireflies in a jar?
Pieces of me break away and disappear in the dark
I look around for help, and of course, there you are

Lying awake, another mistake
How could I have missed the signs?
Racing thoughts, stomach in knots
Time has come to redefine

A life of faded benevolence

How I do it.
